William Garritt James - Briary Bill of Crowfield who always wore the smock frock and hat worked as an agricultural labourer for the Timms, and in winter would graft roses onto briars. The pictures on the stile were taken by Ivy Timms of Whistley farm 2 days before his death aged 82 in 1913.
He was known as the village philosopher and had deep knowledge and love of the countryside, its flowers and wildlife.
