Description of Project:

Building a cycle path on the existing verge from the entrance to Crowfield from the B4525 (next to the Safety Camera) to the turn off to Syresham to join up with the National Cycle Route 70. The distance of the path is approximately half a mile.

Purpose of Project:

As Crowfield is a small settlement on a no through road off the busy B4525 this path will provide safe non-vehicular access to the rest of the world.

The current verge is not safe and unsuitable for walking or cycling. The B4525 is designated as red route for its poor accident record and the traffic (including much HGV traffic) along this road has increased since the opening of the new A43 with signing from the dual carriageway as a route to Banbury and signing from Banbury as main route to Northampton.

Community involvement:

Potential users identified as 18 cycle owners, 5 dog walkers, 6 runners, and several horse riders and numerous walkers both local and ramblers.

Casualty Reduction Benefits:

(state personal injury accident record where appropriate)

1 fatality in last 3 years at junction of old A43

1 Accident and Emergency admission (August 1999) as result of vehicle hitting local resident walker on grass verge opposite Whistley Woods

There are numerous incidents of vehicles coming off the road into ditches along the route

Other Community Benefits:

Connection to existing network of local cycle ways and to the National Cycle Route 70

As Crowfield has no amenities the path provides non-vehicular access to shops, pubs and other local businesses as well as churches, schools and clubs in the local villages of Syresham and Whitfield, with environmental benefits and safe access for teens in particular.

Provision of safe pedestrian access to Whistley Wood

Total Cost of Project:                                                    £ 100,000
